Review
"Overall the handbook is a well written, engaging, comprehensive review of the current literature on the efficacy of various interventions for alcohol and other illicit drug use disorders. It could become a useful guide for physicians and other health care professionals looking for scientific evidence for relevant interventions, as well as for researchers to better understand where their future studies need to focus on." (Asian Journal of Psychiatry, 2013)
"Distilling the vast amount of psychiatric information into a foundational text is no easy task, yet the authors have masterfully accomplished it, providing a book that will be of great value to those interested in mental health."(Doody's, 2011)

From the Back Cover
Effective care of complex mental health problems requires teamwork and a shared vision, but standard textbooks overlook the importance of multidisciplinary cooperation. To provide the specific information trainees need for proper patient care, Allan Tasman and Wanda Mohr combined their expertise from Psychiatry and Psychiatric Nursing to create Fundamentals of Psychiatry, a pioneering work that takes a distinctive integrative and multidisciplinary approach to psychiatry.
They have rewritten the essential information from the main chapters of Psychiatry, Third Edition, (edited by Tasman, Kay, Lieberman, First, and Maj) to produce a thorough but compact first textbook for those in training in mental health or for practitioners interested in a compact clinical reference. The intent was not to be exhaustive or comprehensive, but to distill the content to a "need to know" form.
This book is a complete reference for DSM IV-TR disorders. It includes screening and assessment measures, differential diagnosis, necessary laboratory tests for diagnosis and treatment, the major treatment modalities (including psychopharmacotherapeutics), and special issues practitioners may face in treating patients with each disorder, including consultation and referral. It also provides information on therapeutic relationships, professional relationships, diagnostic methods, psychiatric emergencies, cultural and ethical/legal issues.
The nature of psychiatric disorders is such that understanding the person who has the illness, with all their pre-existing personal strengths and weaknesses, is essential to optimal understanding of the patient and for implementing a treatment plan. The authors take an integrative approach to patient care that acknowledges the complexity and uniqueness of the whole person within his or her contexts, making use of many means of understanding them. This philosophical approach affirms the collaborative relationship between patients, their families, and caregivers from different disciplines.
Within their unique multidisciplinary framework, the authors present an extremely well-written guide that:
- features sound clinical advice throughout, reflecting current thinking without overwhelming the reader with references and data
- presents clinical vignettes that illustrate common situations
- is especially suitable for course development and as augmented reading assignments
- is accessible to readers from junior to senior trainees.
This careful condensation of the massive psychiatric knowledge base is as engaging as it is user-friendly. Mental health professionals in training and in practice can turn to Fundamentals of Psychiatry with confidence in not only the quality of the material, but also the relevance to actual patient care.

Good vs Ok; it all depends on your level of training
By Harry M. Shin
1. I think the amazon description is pretty decent in regards to this book, but here are my brief thoughts:
a. The most important thing for any potential purchaser of this book to realize is that this is really for medical students. It might also be helpful for a 1rst year psych resident or any resident from other specialties. Beyond that, it lacks any depth / details to be of any help to those who are senior psych residents and beyond.
b. Among all the seemingly outdated textbooks out there, this is a definite breath of fresh air. It's well written, it is concise and most importantly, you can tell that it's actually been updated and not some rehash from something that was written 20 years ago (ie as in Kaplan and Sadock).
2. Thus in summary, I would give this a 5 star for all those who are not senior psych residents and above (ie a very good, concise, well written, fairly up to date book on general psychiatry). For those who are senior psych residents and beyond, don't get this book because it'll be too basic and most importantly won't have any detailed data to help you in your practice.

kindle format

I would have really liked to know that this particular book does NOT come with page numbers if you buy the kindle/ online version (even though the recent updates apparently do provide page numbers, they do not for all books including this one). Try typing "Kindle location numbers" in APA formatting for writing assignments! Not going to work. This is my first experience with Kindle for text books, pretty disappointed.

Books seems okay so far. BUT...how can you give me a textbook without PAGE NUMBERS?? Seriously, no page numbers. I understand that this is an ebook, but my instructors aren't assigning reading based on kindle location. They're giving me page numbers.
