When I found out that our school didn't have enough books for eveyone in class I went on line and found this copy. The book arrived before school started and was in beautiful condition. It was much nicer than the books the other kids were using. It was so nice for him to have his own book at home.

A bad book!

I am an instructor and I have used this book for the data structure course based on the recommendation of the department. After a few weeks I decided to replace it by Horowitz's "Fundamentals of Data structures in C". Really Gilberg's book is too bad. It make the subject too complicated. For example, it explains "stack" in 60+ pages long chapter! Really it gives the reader the impression that stack is a complex subject. In a nutshell, avoid this book! Go for Horowitz's book. It is more concise and easier to read.

Avoid this disaster at all costs!

Don't be fooled by any of the positive and semi-positive reviews above, this book is half-baked, poorly detailed and in a number of exercises it is simply flat out wrong!
How I wish I could contact the authors directly. While I'm sure they meant well, the result is pedestrian at best. The prose reads fairly well and the diagrams are well-printed and attractive but once you dive in and start trying to work through the many exercises... you'll soon realize the authors didn't give you adequate information to complete them.
It is not uncommon for an exercise to refer to a method about which the authors have only described in 2-3 short sentences... and worse yet, the exercises frequently ask you to construct solutions based on a combination of methods; which would be great but nowhere in the book will you find even a single example to guide you along.
The publisher's web site does provide a download file of the source-code but you'll soon find that the code is so flawed it won't even compile or build (even using the compilers the authors reference). Books says based on C yet much of the code is C++.
Do yourself and your students a favor. Avoid this book at all costs. You'd enjoy using this book as much as a mechanic would enjoy a flawed and incomplete service manual.
Lest you think I a hyper-skilled software engineer, please note that my review is based on my experience as a computer science student (undergraduate) with a 3.4 GPA.

Could be better, but good enough

I do see a lot of negative reviews, but here is my take. When you want to learn data structures, C is the worst language to learn it. The reason is you need to think a lot harder to understand how your program works. However, it is the best strategy to sharpen your thinking skills. This is a very good book to learn how to create data structures in C. I am not sure why it is used in a college curriculum. May be to make the students do some hard thinking and hence be better programmers in the field?
For me, I am a professional programmer and I have done enough programming in C. I wanted to brush up my algorithm knowledge and also indulge in some good old C programming. Teaching data structures through C is a hard thing to do and I appreciate the authors making an attempt. The way I went through the book is slowly and I worked out all the programs. The code looks good to me, obviously the authors are bit biased towards using C++ idioms. it is not that bad. To learn algorithms, what other choice you have? You need to get with the Sedgewick books. The latest version is in Java, but it is very hard to read through it. There are many other books that take a pseudo-code only approach. So I would recommend this to any one who has little bit more time and are familiar with programming. For beginners, this may not be the right book, if you want to catch up fast.

Convinced that Professor Moriarty is after his life, the detective travels for the hot plains of India to the cool mountain town of Shimla. From there, he journeys on to the vast empty plateaus of Tibet, while encountering deadly red leeches and dacoits on the way. Holmes reaches Lhasa, and is asked to protect the 14 year old to-be-Thirteenth Dalai Lama from the Chinese. Though the protagonist s wish is to find answers to some spiritual questions, he agrees to help the Tibetans. Packed with action, mystery, mysticism, murder, and political intrigue, this book is an excellent read. With a touch of humour, Norbu takes readers on this unusual journey of Holmes. Winner of the Crossword Book Award for Fiction 2000, The Mandala of Sherlock Holmes: The Adventures of the Great Detective in India and Tibet is a wonderful read.

About the Author
Jamyang Norbu is a Tibetan writer and political activist.

He spent more than four decades in India as a Tibetan exile. While attending St. Joseph's School in Darjeeling, the author joined a Tibetan resistance movement in Mustang. He also created the Green Book, a Tibetans-in-exile taxation system, that has been funding the exile government for forty years.

Norbu s literary works are in English as well as Tibetan. His books include Buying the Dragon's Teeth, and Warriors of Tibet: The Story of Aten and the Khampas' Fight for the Freedom of Their Country. His collection of his political essays is titled Illusion and Reality. Norbu is the founder and was the director of the Tibetan Centre for Advanced Studies (the Amnye Machen Institute), Dharamsala. The organization has been awarded the Poul Lauretzen Freedom Prize of Denmark twice. The author has given lectures to present Tibet s case in hundreds of universities across the world. He now lives in Tennessee, USA with his wife and children.

NIFTY SHERLOCKIAN JOURNEY THRU INDIA AND TIBET.

No doubt, Conan Doyle himself would enjoy this singular adventure through 1889 Bombay, and into Tibet. When the evil Moriarty falls from the cliff, and Sherlock disappears, our detective hero gets involved in some nasty business, and learns much about Tibet, Buddhism, and mountain journeys. A mix of Doyle, Kipling, and even Indiana Jones, this is an adventure that never stops, and with a really eccentric group of characters, including the future Dalai Lama. With enough wit and humor thrown in ,this is one "Can't Miss" Holmesian takeoff. Possibly, some of the mysticism may be overdone, but still a fine way to spend a few wee small hours!

The Mandala of Sherlock Holmes - wonderful mystery and suspense!

This is by far the most well-conceived and written of all the Holmes stories I have read--outside of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's, of course. He would have loved this adventure of Holmes that took place in the two years he was unaccounted for in England.

The settings and descriptions of India and "Thibet" in which Holmes found himself could only have been presented by a person who knows the roof of the world and the way of life there thoroughly.

I have done independent studies of India and Tibet and it was such a pleasure to renew my acquaintance with the way things are done and said in that wonderful part of the world.

Holmes' presence was interwoven beautifully into events based on actual actions taken by the Chinese where the Tibetan Lamas was concerned. The author did a splendid job of acquainting the Lamas and Holmes with each other and then circuitously bringing the awful Moriarty back into action with a vengeance.

The plot is as intricate, as subtle, and as many-faceted as it would be if it occurred in real life. Every element in this book is based on real characteristics of both Indian and Tibetan societies. So much credibility! And, Sherlock Holmes was kept true to his nature with an additional facet that would have occurred had he actually been in Tibet, at least to some degree. Read this book for yourself--it comes to a fabulous conclusion!

This book is a great mix of history and adventure and who better to be the tour guide then, Sherlock Holmes. The only problem I had with it, and it wasn't so much the story as it was with the book. The little historical tidbits could have been put to the back. This would have made the reading more fluid and smoother.

Does a great job!

I bought this for my modalities class, and it does a good job explaining all of the modalities and physiology behind them. There are nice summary boxes along the way that save you time if you can't read in depth before class. It also explains some of the controversies with each modality along the way, so it helps with decision making.

Just buy Introduction to Foodservice

Bought this book and Introduction to Foodservice both written by the same people, and it's has, literally whole chapters that are word for word. So just save your self a lot of money and buy a used copy of Introduction to Foodservice.

I found the book to be okay. It seemed to drag in places. The pictures are in black and white. The thing I liked the best about the book was that it had the terms in the margins of the chapters.

Book is helpful overall but so wordy! It uses all these technicial words and repeats the same things over and over but with different words each time. It becomes redundant after a while so I would recommend buying a book that is more direct, succint, and straight to the point. Otherwise, it provides a good general overview of the food service industry. Quite technical as well.
