The Digital Innovation Playbook- Great book!

The Digital Innovation Playbook by Nicholas Webb provides a platform for digital media and innovation on the basis that innovation is "the process of creating exceptional customer value through active listening." The three key words exceptional, value, and listening coincide to create a strategy for businesses to implement successful digital media strategies. Throughout the book, Webb describes innovation as being exceptional products/services. He says, "Exceptional is in; mediocre is out." By developing products that are mediocre, an opportunistic environment is shaped for entrepreneurs to develop "exceptional" products. For example, the Kindle was a mediocre product that did everything it was designed to do. This opened the door for Apple's iPad innovation that had layers of more sophisticated innovations that completely dominated the industry. Through case examples of NewTek, Southwest Airlines, Kodak, U.S. Army and IndyCar, Webb uses real life examples of how these companies are driving digital innovation.

About the Author

Jonathan Fineberg is Gutgsell Professor of Art History at the University of Illinois and a trustee of The Phillips Collection in Washington. He earned his B.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University, an M.A. from the Courtauld Institute in London, and studied psychoanalysis at the Boston and Western New England Institutes. He has taught at Yale, Harvard, and Columbia universities and among his awards are: the Pulitzer Fellowship in Critical Writing, the NEA Art Critic's Fellowship, and the College Art Association’s

Award for Distinguished Teaching in the History of Art. His other books include: Christo and Jeanne-Claude: On the Way to the Gates (New Haven: Yale University Press, 2004), The Innocent Eye: Children's Art and the Modern Artist (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1997), Imagining America: Icons of 20th Century American Art (with John Carlin; New Haven: Yale University Press, 2005; also a two-hour television special on PBS), and When We Were Young: New Perspectives on the Art of the Child (Berkeley: University of California Press, 2006).

Even the poorest should help those less fortunate, as is shown in As Big as an Egg: A story about giving: Set in the then Soviet Union during World War II, it tell of Chaim's efforts to avoid sharing his bit of bread with the sick who are unable to stand in bread lines. A magical something in his house nibbles nightly at his hoarded bread until he begins, once again, to earn Bubba Hinda's blessing, "Zol zein tzu mitzvah," by giving to others. Also out to teach a lesson, this book, at least, makes it fun.

G-d's messengers take mysterious forms. The story takes place in Russia during World War II when food was scarce. After standing on a long line following a hard day of work to obtain his ration of bread, Chaim is stopped by Bubbe Hinda who is collecting donations of bits of bread for poor people. Chaim breaks off a piece of bread as big as an egg and drops it into the sack. Unwilling to contribute again, he avoids Bubbe Hinda and keeps the whole loaf of bread, securing it after dinner and covering all the mouse holds to protect it from mice. But for three mornings he finds a piece missing as big as an egg and spies a mouse's tail disappearing. Finally, he understands and donates thereafter, as big as two eggs, after which the mouse runs out of the house and his bread is no longer robbed. This is an appealing well-told story that reads like a folk tale although it is based on a true story. It has two child-pleasing repetitive refrains: a Yiddish blessing and the as big as an egg, and well composed, drawn and painted evocative illustrations.

Although it reads like a folktale, the story is based on a true incident that happened in Russia during World War II. This story is about Chaim, a hungry refugee, who tries to avoid Bubba Hinda so that he can have his meager portion all to himself. But, strange things keep happening to his bread. In the end, he learns that some things come into our possession just so we can give to others. A neat true story!

My daughter loves Jewish Folk Tales, so I like to buy her books on Jewish Folk Tales. Most of the time, they read like fairy tales, and you wonder, are any of them based on true events, or are any of them true stories? This one is, and that's what made this so enjoyable.

About the Author

Arnold Robbins, an Atlanta native, is a professional programmer and technical author. He has worked with Unix systems since 1980, when he was introduced to a PDP-11 running a version of Sixth Edition Unix. He has been a heavy AWK user since 1987, when he became involved with gawk, the GNU project's version of AWK. As a member of the POSIX 1003.2 balloting group, he helped shape the POSIX standard for AWK. He is currently the maintainer of gawk and its documentation. He is also coauthor of the sixth edition of O'Reilly's Learning the vi Editor. Since late 1997, he and his family have been living happily in Israel.

The free GDB Quick Reference is more useful

In my opinion, the GDB quick reference that you can download for free is more useful. To go over the basics, this book is OK, but for daily lookup purposes, the quick reference is more useful.

I purchased this book as a "filler" to reach over $25 for free shipping. I'm a software engineer and do use GDB frequently.

Well worth the $10, or even more

I work on a very large C codebase, and 99% of our debugging is done in GDB.

Most of the time, singlestepping through every. single. line. would be prohibitively exhausting. Unlike the downloadable GDB refcard, this pocket reference contains enough info on conditional breakpoints and command sequences (among other GDB treasures) to _greatly_ reduce the amount of time it takes to locate the source of a problem among data structures that are simply too big (and sometimes sparsely populated) to step through one at a time.

I'm a big fan of the O'Reilly "Pocket Reference" series, and this one is definitely worth the price.

Grabbed hold of me like a hand shooting out of a grave

Think you know a thing or two about zombies? I thought I did, until I read this book, which rocked my provincial little world and showed me the true history of the undead. In the introduction to The Transatlantic Zombie, Lauro argues that the zombie is perhaps our most “American” monster: It comes from elsewhere. It’s informed by slavery colonialism, and occupation. “Yet somehow,” she writes, "this always gets relegated to the backstory rather than treated as THE story.” What follows is certainly THE story — the authoritative history of the zombie myth, how it was used by Haitians against their colonial oppressors, and how it was stolen by Americans and turned into a commercialized product for the masses. Can the zombie be saved from consumer culture? Based on my reading of this book, I think the answer is a resounding maybe. But if we have a thorough understanding of the zombie’s origins, I think there’s a better chance that the living dead will live on.
