Lives depend on two women when a train derails high in the remote Alps, but an unforgiving mountain, avalanches, crevasses, and other perils stand between them and safety. Associated Press reporter Hudson Mead is an extreme skiing enthusiast who has covered war zones and natural disasters during her long and distinguished career, but nothing could have prepared her for the challenges she'll face when the snow train she's riding is decimated by a massive avalanche.

Librarian Steffi Graham, on her first trip abroad, is anxious to hone her rock-climbing skills in a new and unfamiliar terrain of ice and snow. She gets much more than she bargained for when her talents put her on the team that goes for help. As the two strangers struggle to reach civilization, they must compromise and learn to trust each other, a task that may be nearly as difficult as the journey itself.

Great adventure story
By Silvery
Award winning writer Kim Baldwin does it again. Taken by Storm is a well written and developed adventure novel with a strong shot of romance. Nicely developed strong characters who are challenged to grow through the story with well done secondary characters that are essential to the plot development. There is good treatment of the ramifications of climate change in the plot dev..Tons of knowledge about survival and climbing in challenging conditions just adds to the richness of the novel. Nice heat to top it off!

Another Exciting Read from this award winning author!
By RLynne
Taken By Storm is an exciting story of a scenic passenger train in the Swiss-Italian Alps which is buried by an avalanche. Baldwin does a great job of introducing the two main characters separately in their home settings. Steffi Graham is a librarian in a small town in Washington. She has never traveled out of the country before. Hudson Mead is an award winning reporter for the Associated Press. Steffi is traveling with her rock climbing club, while Hudson is traveling with her photographer. Both women are looking forward to a well earned vacation.
Baldwin beautifully increases the tension as the train passes through the heavy snow in the Alps. She raises the ante when the train is hit by an avalanche and plunges off the tracks and down into a gorge. The twenty-two survivors must work together, pooling their skills, food, and water so that all can survive. Their techniques for melting snow for water, dividing up what food they have, and helping the injured are told in detail, helping readers get to know the supporting characters. Kim Baldwin is a former CNN executive, and I really chuckled over the portrayal of a character from a less esteemed news station.
As food and water are running out, it becomes obvious that the survivors must do something to help rescue themselves. Hudson and Steffi are the best candidates for this, as they are fit, and Steffi has good rock climbing skills. This is where the story takes on more danger and drama, and where Steffi and Hudson must learn to trust each other.
If you're a fan of adventure, good characters, and a love story, Taken By Storm is for you! It has it all!

Taken everywhere and nowhere in the end
By d_fossey
I've been going back and forth about whether this book is a 2 star or 3 star. I really wanted to like this book. Not only is it Baldwin's first novel on her own in several years, but the subject matter is right up my alley. I applaud any author who can create a profound, moving connection between characters who are literally fighting for their lives. Because let's face it, it's really hard to make romantic development between people believable when they haven't eaten in three days. Pyramid of concerns and all that. But after I finished it and really digested the work as a whole, I'm finding a lot more criticisms than positives. There are some spoilers ahead.

The main theme I'll probably keep coming back to in this long review is this book lacks identity. O Book, What Art Thou??! Are you adventure? Are you romance with adventure? Are you an in depth look into human survival-ism? Are you a study of like 18 different characters and how they all react to a tragic situation? It seems at times you are all these things and more, and frankly you aren't very good at any of them.

Let's start with the romance. There is nary a touch, hand hold, hug or even a sleeping situation until like 70% in! So if I'm stuck in a buried train not knowing whether or not I am even going to be alive by the end of the week, I'm throwing caution to the wind and spooning the hot chick in the tour group by night 2. For body warmth of course. There is just very little chemistry between Hudson and Steffi, in fact at one point in the story, they barely like each other. And even when they finally start having heart to heart conversations waaayyy late, it's almost clinical in the way it's done. There is one point where Hudson thinks she might really be digging Steffi and her thought is that "she'd faced down her fears and done an admirable job with the leadership role". That's about as romantic as my boss giving me my annual review. And don't expect it to all come together at the end in an explosion of undying love and mind-blowing sex that tickles your inner hopeless romantic funny bone. Not happening.

So let's move to character study in a tragedy. I swear, I started counting the secondary characters in this book and stopped sometime after 16. Steffi and her friend and partner, Hudson and the photographer, Hudson and the flat mate, Hudson and the boss, Kentucky guy, Anna, Curt and dead wife, Nick, J.T. and macho man crew, Swiss disaster boss, Swiss pilot, various Europeans, various Japanese. I mean chapters are sometimes devoted to these people, albeit short ones. Does anyone not think that is just too many?

For the adventure, survivalist part of this book, I wouldn't exactly call it edge of my seat. In fact, playing with my iPhone 6 was winning out more times in the what to do with my evening decision. And it's not that it was just boring, which much of the time it was, I feel like when too much is trying to be done, everything suffers from mediocrity. I will give Baldwin this, she knows her climbing. When Steffi and Hudson finally strike out to rescue the sorry lot, it starts getting a little more engaging. And they finally spoon in a snow cave.

As you can probably imagine with any lesfic with a natural disaster involved, there comes political agenda. But the political agendas sprinkled throughout this work lack originality or creativity. Most of it is just the same old spouting of the liberal environmentalist mantra we are inundated with in our daily lives. In fact, there is a thought expressed by one of the multitude of characters that global warming was the likely cause of the 50 or so nearly simultaneous avalanches that took place in several European countries. I'm sorry, but really? At least have him be watching some television where a scientist is giving some evidence for this. I'll suspend my disbelief of the simultaneous avalanches for you, but that statement to me is like saying I saw something flying in the air that wasn't a bird or a plane so it was most likely an alien spacecraft. And by the way, the 90s called, they want their "Global Warming" back. I believe the word of the day is "Climate Change".

And then there is J.T. As if it isn't enough that these people have endured multiple avalanches, lost loved ones, and sustained injuries, we need to introduce a villain? Agenda warning, who does he work for... why Fox News of course! J.T. is a somewhat ridiculous, conceited, hot head who later becomes a bit of a punching bag and I suppose some comedic relief element in the end. But with 15 other characters, why is he needed, what purpose does he serve, how does he help the overall theme and direction of the novel? Rhetorical questions.

In summary... I still love Hunter's Pursuit and Whitewater Rendezvous!!

Great reference for recent updates to the C standard
By Jorge
This is a very good reference book for the C programming language. For absolute C beginners I would also recommend used/older editions which are equally good for this purpose and less expensive (e.g. Beginning C 4th ed, Programming C 3rd by Kochan, C Primer by Pratta, and of course the ANSI C K&R). I bought this book because I was interested in the new multithreading libraries including in the C11 standard and for a better reference for C99 additions like standard ints and the complex datatypes. I was not disappointed. The examples about creating, suspending, and exiting from threads are very good, well structured, and with well-paced increased complexity. Wished that some of the examples had side-by-side comparisons between the new C11 multithread.h functions vs the POSIX pthread.h functions since pthreads are so popular, but other than that, very satisfied with this chapter. I should also mention that the last chapter contains many examples about the new Unicode extension in C11, which might be an useful resource for those coding with international datasets. Although many of the early chapters in this book are very similar to the previous 4th edition, you see a lot of preference for the new C11 thread/memory-safe I/O functions over the traditional I/O functions. There are many code examples about the new safe functions, some which unsurprisingly did not changed that much and others which changed significantly (for example, fopen_s is very different from fopen: no FILE * return). As a side note, I have *not* yet been able to compile the example using the threads.h library with the Mac gcc-4.8 fink port. I will update this review as soon as I get them running.

If you are interested in portability over 32-bit and 64-bit systems, you might find very useful the section about the standard int datatypes (e.g. int32_t and int64_t), which have been available for some time. I thought that some of the examples in this book were going to cover the preprocessor macros for printing out standard int datatypes (like PRid32 and PRId64), or otherwise the developer will be required to reach back to the %ld or %lld for formatted printing. This left me a little confused.

The examples in this book about the complex datatype were very good. I personally prefer using complex notation in my DSP libraries over the "struct { double re; double im; }" found in traditional code, which often evolves in many #define statements even for simple math operations. With the complex extension in C99 you can add complex numbers just as you will do for ints or doubles. It makes the code more readable and also shorter! Be careful however if using the complex.h library with legacy code, since some functions defined in this library could probably also exist in older libraries.

In conclusion, I am glad I purchased this book. Great reference for just learning the language or getting familiar with the new extensions in the C11 standard.

Decent tutorial with a direct style
By Scanf
Most introductions to C are targeted at those who don't have any programming experience. This can make tedious reading for those who do. Horton also assumes that you know nothing about programming, but marches through the material at a more brisk pace than usual.

The writing is a bit dry compared to the other best self-study books. The technical level is about the same as Gookin's Beginning Programming with C for Dummies, but with less hand-holding and the explanations can be a bit harder to follow. Presentation is more concise though sometimes less clear than Kochan's Programming in C or Prata's C Primer Plus. The level of detail is about the same as Kochan but less than Prata. One of the nicest features is that there are many small, complete programs with detailed explanation. The C version assumed (in the 5th edition) is C11 and there is no discussion of differences with C89 and C99.

The 5th edition is almost identical in content to the 4th. There are short sections on the new Unicode facilities (uchar.h) and threads (threads.h). The biggest change is a rewrite of the material on strings and arrays (more on that below). Following a general trend I have noticed in Apress books the past couple of years, the typesetting and graphics in the 5th edition aren't as nice as in the 4th.

Many years ago, Microsoft developed a C extension library that added bounds checking to the string operations. They submitted this extension for addition to the C Standard Library and it became known as TR 24731. After years of acrimony and over the objection of seemingly the majority of the C community, it was added to C11 as an optional facility, Annex K (Bounds-Checking Interfaces). Horton rewrote the relevant sections of the 5th edition to use the Annex K versions exclusively and insists that any right-thinking programmer will follow suit. There is no warning about the limited acceptance of Annex K.

Due to this issue, while I recommend the 4th edition as a decent beginner's text, I don't recommend the 5th. To be fair, the 5th edition is the only book I know of at the moment that has sections (however brief) on uchar.h and threads.h.

One of the best on C
By Anonymous787
This review has been made in exchange for a free book. I have included errata in it.

I already know C. To start, I think C, from my experience, is the best language to learn how to program in general & master concepts such as pointers, dynamic memory, algorithms & others. You can even in a limited way do polymorphism in C! O'Reilly's - C Pointer Book has more on this. Beginners may find it easier to learn structured programs with C before taken on OOP in C++.
This is such a nice book on C. It's one of the best for learning it or to use for teaching it. The author did an excellent job in how he wrote the book. For the most part, throughout , you'll find his writing style to be clear & easy to understand. He explains concepts very well, thoroughly & in an unrushed manner.
As with any programming language, there's a lot to know. You certainly get an extensive coverage in C but at a comfortable pace. This new edition does show you some of the new C11 features such as safer functions , multi-threading & new Integer data types.
The book should be read sequentially since most chapters build on what you learned previously. It progresses in difficulty & later on goes into advanced topics.

Things that help you learn are:
1. lots of example programs -see the concepts in action
2. Design a Program Sections -shows a step by step process on making complete
programs for solving a given problem. The program applies the concepts you
learned in that chapter.
3. exercises (some are challenging)
All the code for the above is in the download which I'm glad it includes (3.) You can use the free C11 compiler, Pelles C with them.

I like the author's approach on how you learn to write programs. Most programs you encounter are made from what you've only learned so far. You start with a simple program & as you learn more concepts , you progress to making bigger, better & more complicated programs.

Some other things I found helpful:

2 games : tic-tac toe, reversi. Reversi has a nice, interesting AI code that examines a move ahead by looking at the computer's & player's possibilites to determine computer's best move in that turn. -essential to know how for other games like chess

what size_t is,
coversion of wide & multi-byte characters
how compiler converts between 2 data types not the same,
info. on pointers & arrays, function pointers , string manipulations , I/O section

You'll have an enjoyable learning experience with C & achieve a lot with this book.
Highly recommended!

This book is the one of the best books that I ever read, and best by Brenda Joyce. If you loved her series of the Bragg family you'll love this book. In fact this is the story of Shoz's parents in, The Fires Of Paradise. (A very nice surprise that I found.)This is passionate love story between Candice, a stronged willed woman and Jack Savage, a man who walks between the two worlds of the whites and the Apaches. Together these two find a deep love that is filled with passion that borders on obsession. The love between this two was jumping off the pages. This book was so great, that I counldn't put is down. I never wanted this story to end. This two characters are hot! Although it is hard to find this book, it is well worth any price. I'm never letting this book go. Find it, you'll love it.

Definitely a Keeper!
By A Customer
This novel is out of print and it took me forever to find it. It was defintely worth the search. It is a great novel about half-breed Indian warrior who brands Candice, a blonde beauty his woman. The two go through so much it was a wonder either of them did not break before the end of the story. It is a book worth reading. It reminded me a lot of "Innocent Fire." It is difficult to get your hands on this one but as I stated before it is worth the search. Now I have every novel Ms. Joyce ever wrote. She is a great and wonderful writer not to mention exciting.

Great Start, Poor Ending
By Ciao Bella
I have read all of Brenda Joyce's books and I am usually satisfied with her writing. I was especially looking forward to reading the Darkest Heart because it seemed different from her others. More culture and in depth history. But about half way through the book, Candice's character becomes annoying. She says she is a lady, but the way she speaks and acts is like a spoiled child. She has no sense of the word culture and is ignorant about Apache life style. Even after being captured several times, she does not conform to their rules and talks about them in a negative way. Jack's character was super hot in the begining, but after a few times I realized he just can't keep his pants on. The excuse is always, I haven't had a woman in a long time. I just wanted Candice to grow up and stop worrying about what other people think and for Jack to decide which side he will choose.

Blockchain: Blueprint for a New Economy, by Melanie Swan

Bitcoin is starting to come into its own as a digital currency, but the blockchain technology behind it could prove to be much more significant. This book takes you beyond the currency ("Blockchain 1.0") and smart contracts ("Blockchain 2.0") to demonstrate how the blockchain is in position to become the fifth disruptive computing paradigm after mainframes, PCs, the Internet, and mobile/social networking.

Author Melanie Swan, Founder of the Institute for Blockchain Studies, explains that the blockchain is essentially a public ledger with potential as a worldwide, decentralized record for the registration, inventory, and transfer of all assets—not just finances, but property and intangible assets such as votes, software, health data, and ideas.

Topics include:

  • Concepts, features, and functionality of Bitcoin and the blockchain
  • Using the blockchain for automated tracking of all digital endeavors
  • Enabling censorship?resistant organizational models
  • Creating a decentralized digital repository to verify identity
  • Possibility of cheaper, more efficient services traditionally provided by nations
  • Blockchain for science: making better use of the data-mining network
  • Personal health record storage, including access to one’s own genomic data
  • Open access academic publishing on the blockchain

This book is part of an ongoing O’Reilly series. Mastering Bitcoin: Unlocking Digital Crypto-Currencies introduces Bitcoin and describes the technology behind Bitcoin and the blockchain. Blockchain: Blueprint for a New Economy considers theoretical, philosophical, and societal impact of cryptocurrencies and blockchain technologies.

Kool-Aid
By Chris Edwards
Perhaps the reason I have organized my life to be biased towards more freedom and less money is that money is, to me, unpleasant stuff. It's unhygienic and stressfully complex. Cryptocurrencies do seem to have the former under control, but, to me, they do nothing for the latter. I'm no stranger to public key cryptography (my PGP key is from 1999) and while I think it's great that the fundamental ideas of asymmetric cryptography are being applied with enthusiasm in diverse fields, I'm not sure LaZooz and its ilk are really the harbingers of profound progress that this book seems to think they are.

To start with this book was filled with grand but hollow language. For example.

"Blockchain technology can potentially unleash an important element of creativity and invention in anyone who encounters the concepts in a broad and general way. This is in the sense that it is necessary to understand the new ideas separately and together."

"Blockchain technology could be used in the administration of all quanta."

"The specifics of how they might be different or similar are emerging, and there is presumably a lot of functionality fungibility..."

"...blockchain could become a mechanism for applied ethics."

"...just adding blockchain technology as a feature to existing... activities could be enabling."

"The concept is 'blockchain technology + in vivo personal connectome' to encode and make useful in a standardized compressed data format all of a person's thinking."

"...units of synaptic potentiation in brains..."

"...reunderstood..."

Once past the style issues the book was pretty much a non-technical advertisement for using blockchain strategies. There is a lot of hand waving such as, "Tomorrow, the contract could be automatically completed by a software program..." While a bit nebulous, more interesting to me is the tone of this next bit, " participants... should satisfactorily inform themselves of the security details." Take that, lottery-winning Nigerian princesses! Security details would have been a practical use for this book had it contained any. On the contrary, it had problems like proposing the idea of a "Blockchain Passport - Proof of Existence" while using the unfortunate example of person who we know has at least some other form of "proof" of existence _as a different person_ (i.e. Satoshi).

I personally am interested in blockchains for attestation. But the concept is invalid without the monetary incentives of cryptocurrency (as far as I can tell). If that cryptocurrency is victim to a mania, panic, or crash, the attestation (and loads of wonderful things this book promises) will go down with it.

One of the more grander promises the book makes on behalf of blockchain technology is more freedom. Perhaps the restrictions on consumer genomics are indeed "a classic case of personal freedom infringement". Perhaps they are a classic case of medical fraud amelioration. But is this the place to cogently worry about such issues? The idea that purer capitalism will make health care markets optimal is facile without some deeper philosophical discussion about medical ethics. Or as the book says "We do not want to reduce the qualitative aspects of life to a purely and nakedly economic situation."

Speaking of facile, thinking that blockchains will be fundamental in curing the deep problems of scientific publishing is nonsense. That problem was specifically targeted and completely cured in 1989 with a brilliant invention called the World Wide Web. And yet, astonishingly, scientific publication seems to be the last obvious application to be tentatively migrated to the web. I fail to see how blockchains will somehow overcome the scientific community's inability to use their own technologies. (Disclaimer - I work in a university research lab.)

I was actually hoping that this book would have a good _technical_ introduction to blockchain technology without going into actual coding (the O'Reilly SSH book is a good example of that) but this book had almost nothing of value in that respect.

Although the technical details of blockchains, remain somewhat vague in my mind I did learn that Bitcoin uses elliptical curve cryptography. I'm no expert but on November 6, 2013, Bruce Schneier wrote, "I strongly believe that the NSA has a significant advantage in breaking ECC." Not exactly inspiring confidence. But let's assume this is an implementation detail which will be ironed out in the glorious blockchain technologies that emerge on solid cryptographic principles. The same solid fundamental cryptographic principles which make PGP such a broad success with everyone you ever email. You're all using PGP and having key exchange parties, right?

Though this book was mostly dreamy cheerleading, there was a tiny bit of circumspection. The Mt.Gox fiasco was begrudgingly mentioned with the understanding that such a fate is not inevitable. In fact, "Other self-regulating industries include movies, video games, and comic books." That's certainly not very strong. First of all, I truly hate to mention it but there is a despicable movie industry involving children that isn't so good about self-regulating. Of course the main industries which can't be trusted to self-regulate, (or correctly, can be trusted to *not* self-regulate) are banks and other industries that handle other people's money.

The book ends with pure speculative Kurzweilian science fiction. "For example, if you are an AI or a digitally uploaded human mindfile, smart contracts could possibly..." And (spoiler alert) "Even beyond conceiving of blockchain technology as a core infrastructural element to scale the future of human progress, ultimately it might be a tool for increasing the information resolution of the universe." It's not completely inconceivable that the singularity could come from blockchain technology (obviously since this book conceives it). However, after reading this book, the idea still seems frivolous to speculate about.

At the end of the day, money is about trust. Whether it's your country's central bank or Mt.Gox, the flavor of that trust tastes the same. This book tastes like Kool-Aid.

caffeine induced evangelism for the blockchain(or: orgasmic notes on the author's internet browsing)
By Senseless Reasonability
I'm sorry, but save your money. Seriously, the first two chapters may be worthwhile, but after that the book completely degenerates and never at any point recovers. It becomes endlessly repetitive, seemingly forgetting it has only just three, four, maybe 10 sentences back written almost the exact same sentence. The effects of caffeine are everywhere: it just gushes orgasmic desire for the blockchain and everything imaginable in the universe it will eventually touch 'transform, effect, change every conceivable dimension of our economic, social, and political lives...'. Really, this is the main problem: its incredibly grating and irritating to read, becomes, really, the perfect representative of what wrong with these 'innovations' and the groups that produce them and why we should be wary. For that, its worth reading I guess, as a case-study in its own right.

On the other hand there is the incredibly poor research that the book is based on. Posts in chatrooms and at the bottom of some blog count for the author as substance enough to expound on the great potentials already being worked out in the blockchain community. Fair enough, this kind of research will save you the time of browsing a few websites yourself; the problem, though, is that the author seems to make the subtle leap from the sometimes interesting content of these internet-comments to deducing broad academic significance of them and elaborating them in an academic language that seems to establish their significance as already accepted(Deleuze and Heidegger get mentioned a couple times, strangely). That, unfortunately is far from the truth and what you end-up with is an endlessly recurring confrontation with the naivete of the author and or their ignorance of what should count as real research on a topic and or their attempt to evangelize something in a revolutionary language in order to drum-up interest, all integrity put aside. And that's also the problem I see in this space generally: one 'white-paper' after another, another long 'logical analysis' of the security of a 'coin' decomposing into increasingly complex system of conditional 'proofs' relying on nothing more than basic natural language for their establishment. Too much of it is amateurs simulating professionalism or ignorance masquerading as intelligence..

Anyway, apologies for my rant. I think this stuff is interesting, the blockchain, etc. But this book doesn't amount to much more than a collection of notes that would probably, if properly edited, fit on a single sheet of paper front and maybe back.

Market survey laced with science fiction
By Oculus
I am new to the blockchain and bought this, after reading the reviews, because I thought it would provide me with a framework that would allow me to dig deeper. The book did that, listing the players in the market (some of the links have vanished) with a little context, potential uses of the technology (the appendix provides a comprehensive list of practical applications), and some of the thinking of the community.

One of the eye-opening things for me was the possibility of autonomous code running outside the framework of national jurisdictions and regulatory bodies. Distributed autonomous code (!), distributed autonomous corporations (!?) and distributed autonomous societies (???) are all built on the principle of 'smart contracts' - pieces of code that have defined triggers and precise outcomes. Having been in business for 34 years, I approach smart contracts with considerable skepticism: there are always 'gotchas' that need to be considered should they arise, and most aspects of business aren't going to be reduced to a finite state machine any time soon or probably ever. Nevertheless, this was the kind of thing I hoped to find in this book.

Having read the reviews, I expected the author to go over the top. She exceeded my expectations. I can't recall any author who has made more sweeping claims for an emerging technology. She envisions self-owning cars (not self-driving cars) and mindfiles that contain your thoughts and emotions that are uploaded into the cloud. She imagines smart contracts as the way to protect the rights of those mindfiles in their digital ecosystem, and talks about distributed autonomous societies, as mentioned above. She touches on man/machine hybrids and references science fiction books to support cautions she raises regarding the perils of autonomous code. She concludes the book by claiming that blockchain can increase the information resolution of the universe, as if this is the highest good imaginable. All of this facilitated by blockchain! But it's not really blockchain she's focused on, but a commonly accessible, immutable database that is transnationally distributed and maintained by unspecified incentives. 'Blueprint for a new economy' this is not.

The weaknesses of blockchain per se and the operational challenges of scale are not balanced against the benefits she envisions, although some of these do get a mention in passing. I would have liked to see more thoughtful consideration of whether a '51% attack' is more or less likely over time and the consequences if cryptography were to be compromised at some point. Also, a discussion of the (tremendous) resources required to mine blocks and the environmental impact of doing so. Finally, if blockchain catches on and enables transactions on the order of a few cents, the scale of today's infrastructure will be tiny compared to what will be required in the future not only to update the blockchain but to query it. Who will maintain that, how will it be federated (to avoid a 51% attack) and what incentives will support that?

The book was not well served by the science fiction. At the least, those musings should have been placed in an appendix rather than sprinkled about. The space this would have freed up would have been better dedicated to providing more context about the players in the industry today and their strategies. Reading this book, you will have their names and a sense of their mission, but you'll need to go the their websites to understand what makes their businesses tick.

From the Back Cover

Although some examples of phase portraits of quadratic systems can already be found in the work of Poincar, the first paper dealing exclusively with these systems was published by Bchel in 1904. By the end of the 20th century an increasing flow of publications resulted in nearly a thousand papers on the subject.
