The manual is good for the price. It is very simple; a starter for beginners. It depends entirey on visuals, with no explanation of the process, so it might be a little discouraging to some students. The first drawing (Draculaura) makes a big head in the first three steps, then unexpectedly the size of the head is reduced starting with the fourth frame. I feel the author's intention was to have a bigger figure to follow better the details, but it might be somewhat confusing when you change sizes. You get what you pay.

A Treasure Trove

Very nicely done!

I'm a bit weak yet to understand the details of some of what this book has to offer. (I'm not certain of my strength, as I seldom play online, but the people I play seem to estimate me around 10k-13k.) But, even at my level, memorizing these games and going over the commentary in the book has already, I believe, made me a stronger player.

The writing is clear and easy to read, even if you don't yet understand all of the implications of what is being said.

I look forward to years of added depth as rereads and further play bring me toward a deeper understanding of the incredibly rich teaching that this book has to offer.

I also really like the way Lee Sedol 9P and his sister (she helped him write the book) included commentary about his emotional state and thoughts during the games, as well as some anecdotes about his life. While perhaps not strictly necessary, they liven up the book and give it some added character.

Robin Ray Green, L.Ac., MTCM, is a licensed acupuncturist and herbalist, with a Master’s in Traditional Chinese Medicine from the prestigious Five Branches University in Santa Cruz, CA. She has over ten years of clinical experience using Traditional Chinese Medicine to help children heal from asthma, allergies, eczema, and other common health problems that Western medicine doesn’t adequately address. Robin founded the Center for Advanced Acupuncture Pediatrics, which provides premier pediatric acupuncture training worldwide. About the Author

Elayn Martin-Gay has taught mathematics at the University of New Orleans for more than 25 years. Her numerous teaching awards include the local University Alumni Association’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, and Outstanding Developmental Educator at University of New Orleans, presented by the Louisiana Association of Developmental Educators.

Prior to writing textbooks, Elayn Martin-Gay developed an acclaimed series of lecture videos to support developmental mathematics students. These highly successful videos originally served as the foundation materials for her texts. Today, the videos are specific to each book in her series. She has also created Chapter Test Prep Videos to help students during their most “teachable moment”–as they prepare for a test–along with Instructor-to-Instructor videos that provide teaching tips, hints, and suggestions for every developmental mathematics course, including basic mathematics, prealgebra, beginning algebra, and intermediate algebra.

Elayn is the author of 12 published textbooks and numerous multimedia interactive products, all specializing in developmental mathematics courses. Elster Strikes Gold Once Again.

Elster has done it again with his latest vocabulary building program. I must admit that I was expecting the format to be similar to Verbal Advantage in that after every level, there was a quiz that wasn't just about the words in the level you just completed, but it would also include questions about some of things he would share about the words that were related to other words as well as their origins. There was no pretest or posttest, either (which didn't bother me because this edition was more of a straight read through aside from the familiar quizzes after every ten words). A good number of the words in Word Workout came from Verbal Advantage- he just used them as synonyms for the words in Verbal Advantage, but he expounded on those words in Word Workout. You'd only know that if you perused Verbal Advantage over and over... and then over and over, again (as I have for the past several years). Nevertheless, Elster did an outstanding job with his latest work; it was well worth the wait. I recommend it for the casual word lover, to the serious logophile.
