Dave's insight into living with cancer from a physician-turned-patient's perspective is enlightening and thought-provoking. Faith Story

Dave and Amy and Nathan and Eric chronicle their exceptional story, as was told real time on their Caring Bridge site over the last two years. At the time of the original publication, the writing nurtured an entire community into discussion about issues of faith, hope, love and grace. The Eitrheim family has now provided an ongoing gift, teaching others how they might live, as this earthly life comes to an end.

The book provides study questions between essays that make it a great resource for personal reflection or small group study. These questions are similar to those that were naturally elicited in people when they read the story as it unfolded.

A must-read for all of us who will some day walk or run the same path, not into darkness, but into light.

A wonderful book for all

Insightful, inspiring, humbling, genuine and thought-provoking stories written by one of the most intelligent and giving people I've had the pleasure to know. Growing up with Dave as a member of my family, it was easy to see how much my parents respected his friendship, expertise, and kind heart. I soon grew to understand what awesome people he and Amy are, and how lucky I was to have them as an aunt and uncle. Their book has wonderful life lessons on facing enormous challenges with grace and how we can truly live life to the fullest. Rest in peace, Uncle Dave.

Inspirational life shared by a man of great faith and wisdom.

This is a very inspirational book. Reading it has me thinking of all the things that I have been lucky enough to have in my life and what I should be doing to make life better for those around me. I wish I had met Dave.

About the Author
THERESA REBECK's plays include Bad Dates, Omnium Gatherum (a Pulitzer finalist), The Scene, and Mauritius, which won Boston's prestigious IRNE and Elliot Norton Award and premiered on Broadway in 2007. Rebeck has also won the Peabody, the Writer's Guild of America Award for Episodic Drama, the Mystery Writers of America's Edgar Award, the National Theatre Conference Award, and the William Inge New Voices Playwriting Award. She holds a Ph.D. from Brandeis University and lives in Brooklyn with her husband and two children.

"The Truth is like a great f**@"

I saw this play on Broadway with the original cast, and I quite enjoyed it and made a mental note to read it, as I thought it seemed to have some rather nice moments. I thought it had depth.
Having read it seven months after seeing it, I am not sure that it holds up so well. It is a fine piece, enjoyable and funny at times. But I did not find it all that profound or especially well written. It is a decent play, but not a great one, and there are many others you can read with much more to chew on.
There are five characters in "Seminar", and only three that have much development. The premise is that four writers pay a formerly successful writer to teach a private writing seminar. The main character, Leonard, is intriguing to the reader, and in performance is certainly dominant, but I feel that was due to the fact that Alan Rickman was playing Leonard when I saw it. I wonder if he would be as dominant, and important, a factor in the play with a weaker performer. Leonard does not leap off the page when you read "Seminar". Since he is the teacher who the other four charters revolve around that can present a problem.
I don't mean to insinuate that I did not like reading "Seminar", I did. However, it is a good play; it is not a great one. I enjoyed watching it, enjoyed reading it. It is quick in performance, and on the page. However, don't read it thinking it is a brilliant piece of modern drama, or you will be disappointed. It has moments, for instance there is a great monologue that ends scene eight that leaps off the page, and is the finest writing in the play. There are enough moments like that to make it worth your time.
A note about my edition, it was published by "Productions in Print" Press, and there are tons of typos and errors. Too many to be forgiven. Find a better edition, where the publishers were more careful with the editing.

Muscular writing about a life as a writer.

Rebeck creates complex and challenging characters whose desire to create is tested within a small circle of fellow writers. Whether you agree with their choices and how they live their lives is up to you, but Rebeck gives her seminar participants both rough edges and vulnerability as they lay themselves before their compatriots in service of the written word. The pain that these artists endure and inflict on others is palpable, and yet with sympathy and humor, Rebeck reveals these literati wannabes against the back board of a bruised and battered misanthrope of an instructor who makes love AND war -- with them, and with his own journey as an artist.

One of my favorites!

This is a very well written dramatic comedy about writers.

Not only is it interesting and highly entertaining--but the characters are complex and full of life.

I've read a lot of plays with happy endings and likable characters--Rebeck creates complex and interesting characters that are very human and make you think.

We have all had that professor that makes us think "Do you have to be so mean?"

Leonard--The writing professor acts as a wonderful tragic hero and reminds us just how difficult it is to be an artist.

Love, Love, Love it!

Fernando Diz and Martin Whitman's Distress Investing is a practical tool to both beginner and experienced investors. Today's worldwide economic downturn has created attractive investments for distressed investors which makes this book a timely release. Distress Investing guides the reader step by step from defining distressed debt to valuation. Understanding creditor's rights and bankruptcy law allow distressed investors to capitalize on investments that are overlooked by individuals who are not knowledgeable of their securities' rights. In addition, it offers insight into many of Martin Whitman's strategies that he has employed during his long successful career of investment finance. Distress Investing is well written and provides excellent examples that make it an easy read. I would recommend this book to any individual looking to expand their knowledge base beyond equities.

Meant for the Institutional Investor

This book is filled with a lot of knowledge about investing in distressed assets and navigating your way, as an investor, through the the bankruptcy process. However, this book is for institutional or-- in the words of Martin Whitman-- "control" investors. There is close to nothing of value here for the retail investor who is looking to understand this aspect of investing and profit from it. Joel Greenblatt's chapter on bankruptcies in "You Can be a Stock Market Genius" is far more valuable for retail investors.

Too difficult for the layman on the subject

The book may be good for people who are very familiar with distress investing, but honestly that I can not judge. What I can tell is that the book is totally unsuitable for people unfamiliar with the subject. I stopped reading the book somewhere in the middle (and that is the first book in a list of about 70 on investing (or trading) where I gave up) because I was overwhelmed by the jargon and the descriptions of laws surrounding distress investing. I had the impression that it was more a book for lawyers and other people involved in the legal aspects of bankruptcies. But it is definitely not suited for common stock investors. If you don't have THOROUGH knowledge of the field, the book is certainly not for you.
